  9. Grete, who is from Norway, began running 
  10. track when she was 12. In those days, she 
  11. ran shorter races, but she knew she was 
  12. better at the longer distances. Grete won a 
  13. bronze medal in the 1,500-meter run at the 
  14. 1974 European championships and another 
  15. bronze in the 3,000 meters at the 1978 
  16. championships. But Grete really made her 
  17. mark in the marathon.
