- record in the 3,000-meter
- run. But at the 1976 Olympics, the longest
- womenΓÇÖs race was the 1,500-meter run!

- Grete, who is from Norway, began running
- track when she was 12. In those days, she
- ran shorter races, but she knew she was
- better at the longer distances. Grete won a
- bronze medal in the 1,500-meter run at the
- 1974 European championships and another
- bronze in the 3,000 meters at the 1978
- championships. But Grete really made her
- mark in the marathon.
